We all want to feel that we have made an impact to those around us. We want to be remembered and leave something momentous behind. We want to live a happy life and accomplish many things. We want to dream and realize our dreams.
In our quest to reach our dreams, we often think of steps that we have to complete in order to get there. We formulate elaborate plans of activities that have to be performed in order to be successful. Our instinct tells us: ‘First I have to do this, then this and then that’. We think that greatness will come from completing certain tasks (e.g. studying, exercising more, saving more money). Soon we become despondent when we discover that completing a task did not make us successful people. Studying alone is not going to make you more successful in your career. Exercising alone is not going to make people like you more. Saving money alone is not going to make you flourish financially.
We keep thinking that by ‘doing’ things we will reach our goals when in fact it is by ‘being’ something that we reach greatness. Being successful calls for the development of traits that successful people have. Achieving goals regularly requires a certain Lifestyle. It is by living a successful lifestyle that you accomplish your dreams/goals. Whatever goal you have – being successful in your career; realizing financial freedom; becoming more popular with your peers – can only be achieved if you forget about once-off tasks and focus on lifestyle development.
Champions are rewarded in public for what they do in private. It is by living like a champion, even before you are one, which leads to becoming a champion. Great sport heroes did not magically become champions the day they decided to pursue a career in sport. Long before we read their names in the sport section of the papers, they embarked on a journey that involved developing the skill they will need to become champions. They formed a champion-Lifestyle long before they became champions. In a way, their success caught up with their behaviour.
If you want to have sucess, first you have to develop the habits of successful people. When you develop the habits of successful people, success will catch up with you.
